UTM Tracking

Measure the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns with UTM parameters.

What are UTM parameters?

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are tags added to the end of a URL that tell analytics tools where traffic is coming from and which campaign it belongs to. LiteStats automatically captures these parameters when a visitor lands on your site.

Supported parameters

ParameterPurposeExample
utm_sourceWhere the traffic comes fromgoogle, newsletter, twitter
utm_mediumThe marketing mediumcpc, email, social
utm_campaignThe campaign namespring_sale, product_launch
utm_termPaid search keywordsanalytics+tool
utm_contentDifferentiate ad variationsbanner_a, sidebar_link

Example URL

https://yoursite.com/pricing?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=spring_sale

How to create UTM links

Use our free UTM Generator tool to build tagged URLs quickly. Just enter your base URL and campaign details, and it generates the full URL with copy-to-clipboard support.

Viewing UTM data in the dashboard

UTM data appears in two places on your dashboard:

  • Referrers panel → UTM Source tab — shows visitor counts grouped by utm_source
  • UTM panel — shows breakdowns by Campaign, Medium, and Term with tabs to switch between them

Only pageviews that actually have UTM parameters set will appear in these panels. Regular organic or direct traffic will not show up here.

Best practices

  • Be consistent — use lowercase for all UTM values (e.g. google not Google)
  • Use underscores — separate words with underscores: spring_sale not spring sale
  • Keep it simple — only utm_source and utm_medium are needed for most campaigns
  • Don't use UTM for internal links — UTM parameters are for external traffic sources only. Using them on internal links will overwrite the original referrer.

QR codes with UTM tracking

You can combine UTM links with QR codes for print or offline campaigns. Use our QR Code Generator which has built-in UTM parameter support.
